Incubus
According to Legend, an Incubus is a male Demon that lies upon unsuspecting women, to have sexual intercourse with them, and father a child. The name Incubus is derived from the Latin word ‘In cubo’ which means ‘ That which lies on top’. The Incubus are said to be the male counterparts of the Succubus, even though other legends suggest that they are bisexual, or can transform from male to female form. They are said to take the form of a female to have intercourse with a man, and then after collecting his seed, they transform into a incubus, and put the seed inside a sleeping woman.
The offspring of such an union are called as Cambions, and they are supposed to have supernatural powers. Many rationalists suggest that, as in the case of the Succubus, which was invented to explain sleep paralysis, and wet dreams of men, the Incubus might have been invented to explain pregnancies of unmarried woman, or even rape. Unmarried women might have found it easier to blame their pregnancy on an Incubus, and avoid any blame. It is also suggested that the clergy would have been more willing to assign the crime on supernatural demons, rather than on people in high positions.
Also one of the most famous figures of Arthurian legend, ‘Merlin’ himself , is supposed to have been fathered by an Incubus. A theory that has been explored and developed in many fantasy novels. There have been many contradictory statements, as to whether Exorcism can be used to ward off an Incubus. While some suggest that the sign of the cross, or sacramental confession, can be used to ward off an Incubus. It has been contested that, since the Incubus have no reverence for holy things, the exorcism will not have any affect on them. As with the Succubus, the Incubus can also be found in Legends of several countries, like Chile, Brazil, Germany, and many others.
